West Palm Beach , FL - Gannon Launches Local Business Tax Receipt Season
Anne Gannon, Constitutional Tax Collector, announces that Local Business Tax Receipt (BTR) season begins July 1 and continues through September 30. “The number of BTR’s processed has been declining over the past few years due to the real estate bust and the “Great Recession”, commented Gannon.
Gannon’s office will mail 105,057 renewal notices on June 30. This is an increase over last year’s renewal mailing of 104,000.
Any business in Palm Beach County selling merchandise or services is required by law to purchase a BTR. This includes one-person companies and home-based businesses. In addition the BTR, businesses must also comply with any local license and ordinance requirements. “Compliance with BTR rules simply mean a business is following the law”, says Gannon. “Consumers should not conclude that the BTR is an indication of merchandise or service quality.”
BTR fees are based on the type of business. The most common fee is $33 charged to businesses with 10 or less employees. The fees increase in steps in direct proportion to the number of employees a maximum of $236.25 for 51 or more employees. Contractors and restaurants have different guidelines for BTR fees.
New business owners must visit one of the 6 Tax Collector Service Centers to apply for a BTR. BTR renewals can be done online at www.taxcollectorpbc.com beginning 12:00 p.m. on July 1 or through the mail. Mail completed applications and payments to Constitutional Tax Collector, Palm Beach County, Post Office Box 3353, West Palm Beach, Florida 33402-3353. Credit card companies charge a 2.35 percent convenience fee for all online transactions. There is no convenience fee charged if paying by e-check.
“The number of new businesses and renewals has increased over the previous year,” says Gannon. “We hope this indicates a strengthening economic recovery.”
