HIGH FEES - EXCESSIVE SHIPPING & HANDLING CHARGES BY
ONLINE PRIVATE VEHICLE REGISTRATION RENEWAL COMPANIES
West Palm Beach, FL Anne M. Gannon, Constitutional Tax Collector serving Palm Beach County, issues a warning to alert South Florida residents to be cautious when renewing a car registration online. Consumers could end up on a site owned by a private company – not the county tax collector – and pay extremely high fees and excessive shipping and handling charges.
Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade County residents using private companies are charge several extra fees through their website. Consumers usually find these sites through online searches to renew car registrations or replace tags. The sites that pop up are often sponsored search or private companies, not a county tax collector’s office. The websites look official, are legally registered companies, but they charge extra fees and promise faster service.
One such company operating in South Florida is eTagsDirect.com. The company’s website sends customer orders to the South Florida Auto Dealers Association, which sends the orders to another company, Interstate Title Solutions, Inc., in Delray Beach for order fulfillment. Title Solutions, Inc., is owned by Marlon Carias. eTagsDirect.com fees include a $24.95 Service Fee, $3.00 Florida State Agency Fee and a $5.95 shipping and handling fee for a total of $33.90 on top of the Florida registration fee. The same transaction at the Tax Collector’s office or website includes $3.00 Florida State Agency Fee and $0.70 postage charge for a total of $3.70 in fees on top of the Florida registration fee. A difference of $30.20.
Collector Gannon wants consumers to be aware of these excessive fees and that any consumer disputes or transactional problems must be resolved with these private companies. Tax Collectors are unable to assist with any vehicle registration problems ordered through a private vendor.
Anyone with a Florida tag can renew at the Tax Collector’s website www.pbctax.com or at a Tax Collector service center.
